Though dental implants have become quite popular in dentistry, the technique was actually developed almost fifty years ago. Today, however, our state-of-the-art technology has enhanced their quality and ease of placement. Implants can offer patients the opportunity to regain normal functionality of the teeth without a bridge or dentures.

Implant techniques can assist with various issues including:

  • Individual tooth replacement
  • Loose fitting denture replacement
  • Front or back teeth replacement
  • Complete upper teeth replacement

There are three primary types of dental implants: root, plate form and subperiosteal style. Generally, root implants are the most commonly used and are the most effective because of their similarity to the shape, size and strength of your original teeth.

Your teeth have two main sections, the root and the crown. The root is the part below the gumline, where the implant will act as the root. The first step in the process will involve surgical placement below your gumline. This portion of the procedure will be performed under regular anesthetic or IV sedation as the gum tissue is opened for your implant to be placed into the jawbone. The tissue will then be closed with dental sutures. You may experience some discomfort associated with this part of the process, which you can discuss with Dr. Mattison.

The process of healing will require approximately three to six months. This allows your bone to grow around it. This process is known as osseointegration. During this time, you will likely have a temporary crown to assist with chewing and preserve your cosmetic appearance. When healing is complete, you will return to the office for the implant to be uncovered and an abutment (or connector) attached. This part of the procedure is what supports your final crown. Your gums will once again be left to heal and, on the next visit, an impression will be taken and the final restoration created, which will be comfortable and cosmetically pleasing. Your completed dental implant will be as functional as your natural teeth.

There are numerous benefits to this procedure. They will bond with existing bone and support your teeth firmly. The surrounding teeth will be undamaged and your appearance will be aesthetically pleasing. If you have experienced that “sunken” look because of missing teeth, your natural features will be restored.

Dental implants will be the closest you can come to healthy, natural teeth. You will be able to eat more easily, talk, smile and laugh and enjoy everyday activities with vigor and confidence.
